In the European Union, food information rules are set by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. The 14 allergens listed in its Annex II must be declared not only on packaged products but also for food served non-prepacked in restaurants (Arts. 9 and 44). Each member state decides how the information is given (in writing, orally, on the menu).
The 14 allergens
Cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, tree nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide / sulphites, lupin and molluscs.
Ireland and the UK
In Ireland, allergen information for non-prepacked food must be given in writing before purchase (S.I. No. 489 of 2014); verbal information can be added but cannot replace it, and the written information must be in English (or Irish and English). In the UK the same 14 allergens apply under the Food Information Regulations 2014.
Allergen information in RoxPos
- The allergen catalogue is exactly these 14; you select them per product.
- They appear as a warning in the QR menu item detail; the menu opens in 8 languages (including English and Irish).
- The printed Price List (PDF) can include the allergens, so it can sit at the table or counter where written information is required.
- The Menu API also returns allergen codes, so your own website can show the same information.
The venue is responsible for accurate information and for briefing staff. See our compliance page for details.
